It’s a fine line this series walks and for the most part it stays on the right side. It’s endearing, which is definitely needed when you see him mercilessly killing a whole bunch of people. He just wants to look after them and be a good boss. There’s also the fact that all these characters that he’s never really paid much attention to him before are suddenly acting like real people and they remind him so much of his friends.

When we’re privy to his thoughts we see that all he really cares about is protecting the guild that he and his friends built. Yet at the same time he’s a very nervous and likeable guy.

He very much slips into the rule of the evil overlord and you understand the terror of anyone that comes face to face with him on the battlefield. Ains himself is a very interesting character, the game is clearly affecting him, forcing him to calm down whenever he gets overexcited or removing that pesky human conscience so that he’s not at all fussed about slaughtering 70,000 people all in one go. A lot of my favourite story elements revolve around Ains and the gang. That’s one of my main frustrations with this series, it has such a huge cast and I only care about so many of them, so when the series suddenly switches focuses to someone I’m less interested in, I’m very much just sat there passing the time until the people I care about come back into the story. I think the lizardman arc at the beginning of season 2 is the best example of this, while the lizardmen themselves are all fine characters and I like seeing the various villages, I did come to this show to see Ains and the gang and he is very much shoved to the periphery while we deal with these new characters. On the other hand, if you’re not that interested in the characters that the show is highlighting at the moment then be prepared to buckle in for a good five or six episodes because you ain’t seeing anybody else until we’re done here. On the one hand it lets you get a deeper look at the world, it really digs into certain characters and shows you both the world as they view it and how they interact with Ains and his cohorts. This series, though there is an ever ongoing plot that revolves around Ains learning about this world he’s found himself in and deciding to conquer it, the bulk of the plot is told in a series of smaller arcs. I suppose I’ve been lucky in a way, bingeing through all three seasons at once, if there is a fourth season I have no idea how I’m going to cope. Things are set up and then you’ll have to wait entire seasons before that plot point is returned to, after three seasons there are still things set up in the first season that have yet to have any resolution at all. It’s been frustrating to say the least, worth it, but I think the main problem comes down to the fact that this is a long form story. Overlord is in an even weirder place as at times I am deeply in love with this series and other times I’m screaming and shaking my screen. On the whole Isekai have to work a lot harder to make me stick around than they used to. There are several series from the subgenre that I would rank among my favourite anime of all time, from Escaflowne to Digimon and even over the past few years there have been some great additions to the genre, but the fatigue has definitely set in.

Me and Isekai anime are in a weird place at the moment. Taking the name of the guild he and his friends built, he becomes Ains Ooal Gown with one mission, to spread his name far and wide and rule over this land as its undead overlord! Clues kind of in the title. What’s more all the NPCs that he and his friends created over the years are suddenly alive and acting with personalities and desire all their own. However once the clocks hit midnight, the time the servers are due to be switched off, our player suddenly finds himself in the body of his character, an ultra powerful undead magic caster. When a popular MMORPG is about to shut down, one player refuses to log out until the servers have actually gone offline. Sorcerer King? Overlord? What’s the difference? What’s the Story?
